The position of your feet in sitting is important for your overall balance and stability. Ideally they should be firmly placed on the ground, in order to balance the central core region of your body. However, sitting is a dynamic position in activity; your feet should be moving from one position to another. This means moving them from flat on the floor, to hooking them back on to your chair base. This change in the position of your feet transfers the weight of your body firmly back on your pelvic bones. It promotes an increase in circulation of blood, through unrestricted breathing to your lungs and helps to ease discomforts in your back when prolonged sitting.
One type of riser chair is the 2-position recliner that has two key positions, usually labelled seated and reading positions. This recliner can be positioned anywhere among the sitting and slightly reclined positions. In other words, this chair will cater to any position in between upright and approximately forty-five degrees as well as a standing position.
For many years I used a plank connected with two lines that were joined to make an eye to which I would hook the main sail halyard shackle, but this never felt great. I carried the tools in my pockets and as the chair was hoisted, the ropes started pressing into my sides as they took strain making it very difficult to access them. With an open type bosuns chair I always had this uncomfortable feeling that I could fall out. A few years ago while helping a fellow sailor work on his mast; he introduced me to his new wrap around very snug looking chair. Needless to say my plank chair is now a shelf in an aft locker.
